GlenCarry Stables and the Cudmore Family--A Short History

GlenCarry Stables is a dream realized by Glenn and Carole Cudmore, who purchased the property in 1976, after the barn had been destroyed and the adjacent arena had been damaged by fire. Canadian nationals, Glenn and Carole have both loved horses for as long as they can remember. Their four sons share in their passion for the equine athlete. The absence of horses for this family is simply an unknown--imagine having bit-keepers on the kitchen table as a nuisance.

Glenn and Carole met as teenagers at the local Riding Club in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada, where Glenn was helping teach riding and Carole was taking dressage lessons. They fell in love and had four children: Brent, Brian, Blair, and Barry--all four of whom are accomplished horseman. The four boys grew up in Canada as Glenn and Carole trained and showed at several different barns in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Glenn was a member of the Canadian Three-Day Team in the 1960s. In 1967, he was offered more money than he could refuse for his horse, and according to a favorite story, drove home in a Cadillac with cash in his pocket. From then on, Glenn knew that he could make more money selling horses than riding them. He continues to be a honest horse dealer, cut from the old-fashioned pattern; Glenn centers his philosophy around customer satisfaction and the repeat customer. We hope that our website will help promulgate this, and we thank the many of you who have called us back after many years.

In 1971, Glenn was offered a position at Omaha, Nebraska's Ponca Hills Farms by Allan and Ann MacTier. The Cudmores lived, taught, and rode at Ponca until 1976, when Glenn and Carole purchased the present GlenCarry property and turned it into a hunter/jumper show and sale barn. As children, the four boys did their share of the hard work. Brent and Brian toughed it out on the difficult horses and learned how to bring out the best in any equine athlete for themselves and others for show and for sale. Blair and Barry also rode and showed; and all six family members foxhunted with Omaha's North Hills Hunt.

Today, Brent rides and trains at GlenCarry. He and his wife, Kit Bardsley Cudmore, have developed and maintain the glencarry.com website, which grew from a piggyback on Kit's employer's website to its present domain. Brent and Kit also look forward to visits from Brent's son, Cody, by Brent's previous marriage. Kit works for ConAgra, Inc. as a senior associate in the Strategic Sourcing department. Brian also rides and trains at GlenCarry. Blair has followed in his father's footsteps as a horseman who can "pick the good ones by their looks". Today, he and his wife Karen own and operate nearby Heartland Farm. Karen rides across the continent in Grands Prix and Blair supports her effort. Their two girls, Brooke and Kiley, are growing up with horses and horse shows, just as their father and uncles have done. Barry, the youngest, is riding and working in southern California, marketing his family's horses and catch-riding and training for several well-known owners. His daughter, Rachel, and former wife, Margaret, who live in Omaha, continue to be an important part of the Cudmore family.

Glenn, Carole, and their four sons still have strong roots to Canada, and Glenn and Carole plan to retire there with Carole's sister, Deborah Hyman, and her mother, Jean. The rest of us can't imagine the two of them without a busy barn to run, but figure that Glenn will be hauling horses around till the day he dies, and Carole and her sister will end their days shopping for bargains. You see, we're normal people, more or less, just like the rest of you--except that bit-keepers on the kitchen table are a nuisance, not an oddity, and that our last barn walk-through means listening for broken water bowls as much as our last house walk-through means listening for a crying child.

We'd love to have you visit. We're people-people as well as horse-people, and with all the horses in our barn and the horses we've sold across North America, we're pretty sure that we've got one who's right for you. So please give us a call, and we'll do our best to help you find the right horse. Thanks for stopping by--and remember, you can always keep up with us at www.glencarry.com.
